Reduced Waste / Zero Waste Product Recommendations

Looking to make changes in an effort to reduce your overall contribution to waste? This page provides a list and links to the products I’ve incorporated into my life to live more a more sustainable lifestyle.

It’s important to remember that throwing a bunch of products you’ve already purchased in order to re-buy reduced packaging does not help the problem we have in the US with trash and even recycling. A key in making this transition is to seek new more thoughtful packaging options when it’s time for you to purchase products. The list below will continue to evolve as I find more products to share.

Beauty Products

Lush offers a wide array of handmade cosmetics and other beauty products. I’ve been consistently pleased by the quality of everything I’ve purchased thus far and for many products I’m looking for, they seem to be the best options because they are one of the very few companies that do not do any animal testing, they are 100% vegan, they practice ethical buying standards (only buying from safe and sustainable suppliers), and offer what is called “naked packaging” (consistently seeking ways to reduce waste and use minimal packaging).

Lush began in the UK as Constantine & Weir, which many of you may be familiar with from The Body Shop who bought the Constantine & Weird formulas, allowing Mark Constantine and Liz Weir to create Cosmetics to Go, which was their labor of love to create products that were cruelty-free and offered alternatives to many companies in the beauty industry which fully support animal testing. CTG went bankrupt just 6 years into business, causing Constantine and Weir to create Lush, a company that supported the issues important to them but also explored a simpler business model, using fresh ingredients and simple packaging.

I’ve purchased Lush shampoo and conditioners and while I do like them, I prefer byHumankind soaps. However, Lush is the only option I have found thus far to replace my daily moisturizer. My go to moisturizer is Lush’s Celestial which replaced Clinique’s Redness Solution Daily Moisturizer.

Home Care Products

Puracy is a Texas company that was started by two families in Austin. They sell a variety of non-toxic, plant-based products for your home including home cleaning products, personal care products, baby care, and pet care! As my “baby” is now in college, I haven’t tried their baby products but love their home cleaning products and pet shampoo.

Puracy is one of the few companies I’m proud to partner with. Adoxography Ink may receive nominal compensation from traffic and purchases that originate from our page.

Replacement for Plastic Produce Bags

Instead of grabbing those free plastic bags in the stores produce or bulk sections, I use mesh bags purchased on Amazon. These bags allow me to wash and store any produce I purchase as well as holding most bulk items such as dried banana chips for my dogs.

Personal Care Products

byHumankind sells a variety of personal care products including mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, hand wash, and cotton swabs. Currently I use their deodorant, shampoo, and conditioner and am extremely happy with all of these.

Tissue Products

Who Gives A Crap is a crowd-funded company that produces toilet paper, paper towels, and “kleenex” products that are tree-free. Products are made from bamboo and sugar cane and 50% of the company’s profits are set aside to help build toilets in communities that are in need such as Mathare, a valley in Nairobi.
